Picspam: 5 werewolves who would make Lon Chaney, Jr. proud.
Now that the remake of The Wolf Man is about to be released in cinema—close to a whopping 70 years after the original first saw the light of day—I thought it would be nice to give a little attention to five characters (out of many, many others) who wouldn't have existed the way they are today if it wasn't for this influential 40s movie and its sequels.

While many other monster characters such as Dracula and Frankenstein were portrayed by many different actors, Lon Chaney, Jr. was the only one to portray "his" Larry Talbot in all original Universal monster movies, ofter stating in interviews that "he was [his] baby". He revolutionized the way werewolves are portrayed in the media, probably making them be portrayed at all. He made them people.
And because I personally have wondered more than once what his reaction would be to seeing the massive amount of movies, tv-series, books, etcetera his performance has had influence on, even to this day, I give you 5 werewolves who would make Lon Chaney, Jr. proud, A.K.A. 5 awesome characters we would be sadly missing if Lon Chaney, Jr. hadn't done his thing back in the day.

Warnings: nudity (both male and female); spoilers for various shows, but particularly BtVS season 8, Being Human and SPN; possibly some disturbing imagery; awesome people.

Oh, I LOVE "American Werewolf in London" :D
Mx. Jack Beloitsonnekinde on February 10th, 2010 11:11 pm (UTC)
Me too. I think I saw it for the first time on TV when I was about 6 or 7. SCARRED FOR LIFE. But in a good way. :P

I ALSO saw it on TV. Man, after seeing so many of the old fifties B-movie "OMG, I fell down and I came up with fur taped to my face" movie, this was like a breath of fresh air, the most agonizingly detailed werewolf transformation ever and I was like *clap clap clap*
I would like to get it on special edition DVD. :3

great choices! Oz and Lupin are my favorites, but I like all of these! I'm so behind on Being Human though...

Being Human is fantastic. The mix of humor, drama and horror is like a breath of very fresh undead air. I gotta say I'm not liking season 2 much though, but I've only seen the first three episodes so far so hopefully it'll get back on track sometime soon.

yeah, I watched all of season 1 (i'm pretty sure) but I haven't watched any of season 2 yet...

This is awesome. I was on a real werewolf kick recently so this is a nice reminder of why. I'm rather curious about this new Wolf Man film since from the trailer it looks completely disconnected from the original.
Mx. Jack Beloitsonnekinde on February 11th, 2010 07:46 pm (UTC)
Yeah, it seemed the remake got less and less like original the closer we got to the release date and the more trailers were released. I got to say I'm not completely opposed to expanding on the original material, so I'm curious to see how it turned out.

YEAH, MADISON. I was totally pleased with this list considering you had Oz and George, but MADISON. That girl is HBIC. And oh, Sam. :( That whole episode made my heart ache.

I originally was doubting a lot who to put on the fifth spot. First I was thinking of Karen White of The Howling, or Brigitte from Ginger Snaps, but then I was like "... Madison! Of course!" I liked her character when she appeared on Supernatural, and the ending was so, so sad. :(

I totally would've approved of Ginger, too. But Madison was a fantastic choice.

OMG yes, Madison and Remus! <3333 Awesome characters. :) This is a great idea, especially considering the remake this weekend. (I saw it Monday--it's not very faithful to the original, sadly, but it's pretty entertaining. Benicio's good, anyway.) Very nice work!
Mx. Jack Beloitsonnekinde on February 11th, 2010 07:59 pm (UTC)
Hey, thanks! Yeah, from what I've seen of the trailers so far it seems they've changed quite a bit from the original, though I'm still curious to see how Benicio does it as Talbot -- plus I'm just excited to see how it's turned out as a whole. :)

I wrote a review, if you're interested--it's not too spoilery or anything. :)

I love Being Human, and George is my favorite character! I really like the transformation, because it's really different from what I've seen on shows and in movies before. Really creepy, and that's great!
Mx. Jack Beloit: Georgesonnekinde on February 11th, 2010 08:07 pm (UTC)
I don't know if you've seen An American Werewolf in London or not, but if you like the transformation scenes in Being Human, you'll definitely like it in that. BH is really quite faithful to AAWiL when it comes to that -- you can really spot the influences and inspirations. Though personally I like Russell Tovey as an actor better than David Naughton; the commitment with which he plays his role is fantastic!

No, I haven't seen that movie, yet, but I agree with what you say about Russel Tovey. :)

Yay Madison! She doesn't get enough love. So it makes me happy that you included her. And also yay for Oz.
